Fujifilm’s longest telephoto prime just got a little sibling. Announced on September 4, the Fujifilm XF400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR slots in between the X-series 200mm and 500mm primes, yet comes in lighter and nearly the same length as Fujifilm’s 100-400mm zoom.
The Fujifilm XF400mm f/4.5 R LM OIS WR is meant to fill a gap in Fujifilm’s telephoto lineup, offering a brighter aperture and a bit less reach than the XF500mm f/5.6 R LM OIS WR for tighter sports venues – and a lighter profile for wildlife photo hikes.
While the new 400mm shares a similar design with the 500mm, the new telephoto comes in at 1245g / 2.74lbs – that’s about seven percent lighter than the XF500mm and nearly a ten percent weight savings over Fujifilm’s XF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 R LM OIS WR.
Built with 21 elements in 14 groups, the lens is weighted towards the mount in order to create a better balance with the camera body.
The lens’ linear autofocus motor is built for both quiet and quick performance, Fujifilm says, with the minimum focus distance creating a 0.16x magnification for close shots.
Like the 500mm, the new 400mm uses a stabilization system rated at up to 5.5 stops.
The design of the new 400mm also echoes Fujifilm’s earlier 200mm and 500mm primes, including weather-sealing at 20 points and an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot. The bank of controls offers a bevy of switches and buttons, including stabilization, focus limiter, focus control, and preset AF controls.
The XF 400mm fills a gap in Fujifilm’s telephoto primes between the XF 200mm f/2 and the XF 500mm f/5.6, while bringing brighter, sharper optics than the X series current telephoto zoom choices.
The 400mm creates a 609mm full-frame equivalent on Fujifilm’s APS-C sensors, but the lens is also compatible with both of the brand’s XF 2.0x TC WR and XF 1.4x TC WR teleconverters as well.
“XF400mm lets photographers stay mobile and react to what's in front of them, and they don't have to trade image quality to do it,” said Victor Ha, vice president and general manager of the electronic imaging division for Fujifilm North America. “With super telephoto lenses, the balance of size and performance is the creative advantage, and XF400mm is exactly that. Lightweight, compact, powerful.”
The lens is expected to ship in mid-September at $3,199 / £2,499 / CA$3,899 / AU$4,949
