After debuting its first ever cinema lenses in 2020, Viltrox has unleashed its latest lineup of filmmaking optics at the IBC 2024 trade show in the Netherlands – including a pair of remarkable 10x cine zooms.
Viltrox has been a respected manufacturer of mount adapters since 2009 and photographic lenses since 2018, and is now using its optical expertise to meet the needs of videographers and cinematographers with anamorphic and spherical optics.
Look to la "LUNA"
The headline products at IBC are undoubtedly the new LUNA series of lenses – the company’s first ever cinema zooms. However, these aren’t just any zooms; these are 10x zooms, surpassing the usual 2x or 5x zooms seen in the market.
The LUNA 30-300mm T4.0 ZOOM 10X PL offers full frame sensor coverage with a 46.5mm image circle, ideal for large formats like Arri LF and Red VV. The LUNA 42-420mm T5.6 ZOOM 10X LPL, meanwhile, offers 65mm frame coverage for expansive cameras like the Alexa 65.
Both lenses boast a T4 or T5.6 constant aperture throughout the zoom range, parfocal focusing, adjustable flange distance for compatibility with multiple film cameras, and integrated handle and standard 3/8-inch thread mount – and a unique white chassis design, to differentiate them from conventional lenses.
Things just got more "EPIC"
Viltrox has also expanded its celebrated EPIC series of full-frame anamorphic lenses with two new optics: the EPIC Anamorphic 65mm T2.8 Macro 1.33X and EPIC Anamorphic 135mm T2.4 1.33X Cine Lenses.
Designed to deliver a 2.39:1 aspect ratio (favored by iconic filmmakers such as John Carpenter) from 16:9 cameras, the EPIC lenses feature a constant squeeze ratio of 1.33x from near to far. They also deliver the signature anamorphic flare that has become a signature of such directors as JJ Abrams.
In addition to “zero” focus breathing effect, and an eight-blade aperture that delivers beautiful creamy bokeh, EPIC lenses possess the signature “Retro Pure Color Reproduction” that produces consistent tones (especially skintones), soft image performance and delicate texture.
Fresh from the "Lab"
In addition to the new cinema lenses, Viltrox also showcased two new photography optics – including the first lens in its new flagship Lab series.
The Viltrox AF 135mm F1.8 Lab FE delivers the company’s peak image quality, and has been designed to achieve the resolution requirements of pixel-dense full-frame cameras such as the 61MP Sony A7R V. Its 11-blade aperture renders smooth, dream-like bokeh surrounding a sharp subject.
Promising unwavering clarity from distance to detail, with next-level precision and efficient autofocus thanks to Viltrox’s patented HyperVCM motor technology, the lens is able to switch focus from closest to farthest in 100ms. This also makes the lens a smooth, silent option for video work.
Away from the dreamy portraiture of the Lab lens, the new Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 FE is a "Chip" lens with a difference. It packs a voice coil motor and aspheric elements into an ultra-slim design that is even slimmer than a pancake, so it was called "Chip". It enables photographers to capture a wide-angle view of the world with the lowest possible profile – perfect for street photography, reportage or travel.
