In good news for macro photographers, Canon has recently filed a new patent for a new Canon RF mount macro lens. This new macro lens is due to have a focal length of a 100mm and an aperture of f/2.8, making it a potentially very useful piece of glass for capturing close-up shots.

Featuring the same specs as the current EF mount Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens, this new lens could be one of the best new options on the market for Canon RF users. The Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L lens is one of the best macro lenses on the market and improving on that performance is no feat.

The main function of macro lenses is that they can be used to get an incredibly close view of a subject. Ordinary telephoto lenses aren't able to get particularly near to their subject, which means that photographers aren't able to capture close-up shots. However, the Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 is able to focus as close as 30cm (measured from the sensor). This means that it can produce photos with a 1:1 reproduction ratio.

In short, this means you can fill the frame with a subject more effectively with a macro lens than you can with many other types of lenses.

This feature of macro lenses is extremely useful. However, lenses such as the Canon 100mm f/2.8 are quite versatile because they're not just good for getting close to subjects. Macro lenses in general require fantastic optics and the EF 100mm is no slouch when it comes to its capability to render detail. For this reason, lots of photographers tend to use them for a range of different kinds of photography, including portraits.

Product photography is another area where macro lenses like the Canon EF 100mm can be invaluable. These types of lenses allow you a great deal of flexibility when it comes to working distances and with techniques such as focus stacking, you can produce incredible results even if you are shooting very close to your subject.

News of this latest patent from Canon was first reported on the Canon News website and it's definitely something be excited about. It's great to see Canon continue to produce more and better lenses for its RF mount system and this new RF mount 100mm f/2.8 macro lens from Canon could be a fantastic option for a wide range of photographers.
