Canon to release a $799 full frame RF mount camera in 2022?

Hold onto your hats Canon fans! A new rumor has appeared that might just be one of the most interesting things we've heard so far this year. Apparently, Canon could be planning to release a full frame RF mount camera for under $800 in 2022. It should be noted that it's worth taking this rumor with a healthy pinch of salt, but if it does pan out to be true, then this could be a very welcome move from Canon.

So far, all of the RF mount Canon cameras released have been full frame – and the cheapest so far was the Canon EOS RP, which was launched at $1,299. Offering a full frame Canon RF camera for under $800 / £578 / AU$1,070 would not only be a fantastic way to offer entry-level users an affordable way into the RF system, but it would also undercut rivals offering smaller APS-C sensors at a similar price.

This rumor was published by Canon Rumors, which reveals that a "pretty solid source with a decent track record" revealed this information to them. Canon Rumors also states that "there are obviously no specifications for a camera that is likely at least a year away, but I do believe there is something to this just by what I have been shown".

There have previously been rumors of at least one Canon RF mount APS-C camera, but if this new rumor is true, then this could essentially make the APS-C camera obsolete. While there are technical reasons why someone might prefer an APS-C camera over a full frame camera (such as the increased reach), it would be interesting to see how well an APS-C camera would do against such competitive pricing.

One of the other interesting aspects of a full frame RF mount camera priced at under $800 isn't just the initial price – it's what it could potentially drop down to after the initial buzz has worn off. For example, the Canon EOS RP is only just over two years old, but its price has already dropped down to around $999 from $1,299 in the US.

It will certainly be interesting to see whether these new rumors develop into anything more – or whether they'll turn out to be a distant pipe dream…
