GoPro HERO13 Black review: all about the lenses

On the inside, another excellent refinement of the GoPro formula. On the outside, potentially the future of action cameras.

Digital Camera World Verdict

The GoPro Hero12 Black was an excellent camera, and with not many internal changes, the Hero13 Black is still an excellent camera. Yes, I would have liked to see a bigger sensor to counter criticism of its low-light performance, but in good light, GoPro video is dazzling. The return of GPS and a larger battery offering even better run times also put a little daylight between the Hero12 and Hero13. But where the Hero13 shines is with its new accessories and HB-Series lenses, which add a new level of flexibility to the limitations of the action camera genre – and sets up an exciting future.

GoPro has been in the action camera game for around twenty years now, and in that time it has cemented its reputation as the best action camera brand for absolute top-quality footage. But GoPro can't afford to rest on its laurels, with plenty of competition coming for its crown, and beating GoPro to higher resolutions and bigger sensors. The market has possibly never been more tight – yet probably never been more dull.

The last few years have seen more iterative updates with far less to get excited about. And a year after GoPro's last flagship release, the latest GoPro Hero13 Black seems to follow suit, with another minor spec update. But don't write the Hero13 off just yet. To see what's new in the Hero13 Black, you just have to look outside of the camera.

FeaturesThe new burst capture feature, extended battery life and the return of GPS all add a little something, but otherwise there isn’t much new here over the Hero12.★★★★☆
DesignSame robust waterproof design, but the additions of the magnetic mount and optional Contacto door keep it fresh. But the way the camera handles lenses is the star of the show.★★★★★
PerformanceFantastic quality photos and video in good light, with excellent stabilization, and great new burst mode. But struggles in low light compared to the competition (or phones).★★★★☆
ValueThe camera is still good value and accessories are all good value, but to take advantage of the whole system, prices rack up quickly.★★★★☆
DJI Osmo Action 4

DJI Osmo Action 4
The chief rival to GoPro has rapidly become the king of drones DJI. The Osmo Action 4 is its current flagship, with a larger sensor, we found the Osmo performed better in low light than the current Hero Black sensor, but GoPro takes the crown for resolution and frame rates.

GoPro HERO (2024)

GoPro HERO (2024)
Announced alongside the Hero13 Black, the new budget HERO model offers the essential GoPro experience of a stabilized, all-weather action camera for around half the price. The camera is tiny but still has a screen and mounting fingers. If you just want a simple 4K action cam, then this is a great option.
