Insta360 Ace Pro 2 review – It should be the world's best action camera, but is it?

It beats GoPro on resolution and matches Osmo Action on sensor size – and it says Leica on the front – is this the world's best action camera?

Digital Camera World Verdict

The Insta360 approach to the action camera offers real choice – compared to the competition, obviously, but also in use; the more you use it, the more the flexibility of the hinged screen becomes part of your style. The resolution and low-light chops are also clearly established and this time (unlike the first Ace Pro) I've no worries about how rugged the camera is.

Pros

  • +

8K Resolution and sensor size can't be faulted

  • +

    Logical menu system

  • +

Flip up screen a boon to vloggers and other cases like cycling where fixed screens

Cons

  • -

Slightly bulkier and heavier than the competition

  • -

Better, but a hinge is still slightly more vulnerable in some cases

  • -

It is at the upper end of pricing

Action cameras have been getting into a bit of a rut. The GoPro came out and then, well, if we're honest, things took their natural course for quite a long time. There were slight improvements, but not that much happened.

In the last couple of years, though, Insta360 have been the thorn in GoPro's side that have changed how people record action. In large part that's because of their firmly establishing themselves at the top of the best 360-degree camera league and giving people an alternative way to capture action. One GoPro had thought they might own.

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro is a little bit cheaper, while still laying a reasonable claim to best action camera. It has a color touchscreen at the front and back so you've still got a vlogging monitor by the lens (albeit smaller), and the image sensor is just as big as the Ace Pro 2 so it's great in low light too (though there is no 8K goodness).

The GoPro Hero 13 Pro has a neat swappable filter & lens modifier system, which – if you fork out for the anamoprohic lens – feels a lot more tactile than just setting your Ace Pro 2 to record 8K video at 2.35:1. It also has a brilliant new magnetic mount which impresses, but as a premium action camera it's way behind the Ace Pro 2 (and Action 5 Pro) in low light.
