Digital Camera World Verdict

While Kenko’s Black Mist No.05 filter holds the same high Japanese build quality as the original Black Mist No.1, its effect has purposefully been diminished, but to the point where it’s much easier to replicate its effects in post-production. We think there will inevitably be fewer use cases for this filter, but it will still have some utility for the specific needs of a niche group of photographers and videographers alike who want to inject extra atmosphere into rainy city scenes at night.

Released back in April 2021 Kenko’s Black Mist No.05 filter is the sibling to the company's popular Black Mist No.1 filter, which adds a hazy glow to contrast-rich scenes, though offers half the mist effect.

Much of what we said about the original Black Mist No.1 applies to this newer filter: the premium build quality is identical, and it comes in the same range of screw-in filter threads ranging from 49mm all the way up to 82mm, though we have found it at retailers to be a little less expensive.
