OM System M.Zuiko 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 IS review: an effective 300-1200mm sniper

With Micro Four Thirds' 2x crop factor, the OM System M.Zuiko 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 IS lens becomes a 300-1200mm monster

Digital Camera World Verdict

There's a lot to love about the OM System M.Zuiko 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 IS. For starters, it's effectively a 300-1200mm sniper rifle (becoming 600-2400mm, with a 2x teleconverter) with up to 7 stops of stabilization, IPX1 weather-proofing and zero distortion. However, there's some bad as well; as a rebodied full frame Sigma lens it's far too big and heavy for a true Micro Four Thirds optic, its sharpness is uninspiring and the IPX1 proofing is far behind the flagship IP53 certification of OM's top products. There's no doubt it does an admirable job for sports and wildlife shooters, but it's certainly a case of compromises.

Pros

  • +

    Phenomenal 600-1200mm range

  • +

  • +

    IPX1 weather proofing

Cons

  • -

    Sharpness is disappointing

  • -

A very big and heavy lens

  • -

    Very expensive, too

With OM Digital Solution’s shift in emphasis to consider itself more of an outdoor equipment company that specializes in imaging equipment, the M.Zuiko 150-600mm f/5.0-6.3 IS clearly fits with the new strategy. Effectively a 300-1200mm, thanks to the crop factor of the Micro Four Thirds sensor, it’s very much suited to ‘outdoorsy’ applications and subjects – wildlife, birds, sports, adventure activities, aircraft and sailing.

To further strengthen its outdoor credentials, the 150-600mm is weather-sealed to the IPX1 standard for handling moisture and dust. Additionally, the exposed surface of the front element has a fluorine coating to help better repel water and grease, but also make it easier to clean.
