Digital Camera World Verdict

The Panasonic Lumix GH7 is a significant upgrade over its predecessor, and righting the minor misteps with that model. The GH7 finally offers the latest phase detect autofocus which is a huge step up in performance, and its advanced video formats provide top-tier video capabilities, especially in VLog and ProRes RAW where dynamic range is exceptional. Not just for video makers though, the camera excels in photography as well, boasting impressive image quality, dynamic range, and image stabilization. If you aren't put off by the MFT sensor, then I would seriously consider the GH7 if you want one of the best hybrid cameras on the market, and remains the top choice for independent filmmakers.

For many people, when they think of Panasonic cameras, the GH line might well be the first model that pops into their heads. The GH lineup of hybrid cameras has long been renowned for its video pedigree, with the Lumix GH6 especially being a fan-favorite for independent filmmakers.

However, despite the GH6's brilliance, there was one glaring omission – phase detect autofocus. The GH6 was released just a few months prior to the Lumix S5 II, which debuted Panasonic's modern autofocus system and finally brought Lumix AF into competition with the likes of Sony and Canon. But this left many observers (me), and potential buyers, wondering why Panasonic didn't delay the GH6 release to include this feature.

Sony FX30

Sony FX30
The Sony FX30 is not a hybrid camera like the GH7, but if you are just looking for a camera for video, then it offers a great alternative with impressive recording capabilities and a built-in fan like the GH7.

Fujifilm X-S20

Fujifilm X-S20
The video on the X-S20 does not have as many internal options as the GH7 and recording times are limited, but it is still an incredibly capable video camera, and considerably cheaper!
