RØDE Phone Cage review: mount options aplenty on this solid iPhone cage

Combine your smartphone with a host of movie-making accessories

Digital Camera World Verdict

This lightweight but sturdy aluminium smartphone cage boasts more threads and mounts than I’ve seen on any other cage, so you can attach a multitude of third-party LEDs, mics, tripods and handles to it to create a professional shooting rig. However despite the cage providing a powerfully strong magnetic mount your phone runs the risk of being dislodged if you push or pull it by the edge (which you might do when plugging in a mic for example). However once we discovered this vulnerability we were able to avoid further phone falls and the cage really added to our video’s production values.

Pros

  • +

    Copious shoe mounts and threads

  • +

    Sturdy but lightweight

  • +

    Four cable slots

  • +

    Space between cage and phone

Cons

  • -

    Magnet can lose grip

  • -

    Handles sold separately

Why you can trust Digital Camera World Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out how we test.

The current generation of smartphones enables you to capture high-quality HD and 4K footage that meets the requirements of professional filmmakers. For example, all the supporting review videos that I shoot for Digital Camera World are filmed on an iPhone - see this reviews Performance section for my test of the RØDE Cage.

However to take your video (and audio) production values to the next level you need help from accessories such as a shotgun mic to capture more directional sound and an LED to add fill-light to interviewees. These accessories can be a challenge to mount on a standard smartphone case so you need a grip or a cage with screw threads and cold shoe mounts. Check out our best iPhone camera grips to see a range of ways to turn your iPhone into a professional camera rig.

SmallRig all-in-one smartphone kit

SmallRig all-in-one smartphone kit
Unlike the RØDE Cage this kit ships with essential accessories such as handles, a shotgun mic, an LED, and a mini-tripod, so you can hit the ground running. There’s also plenty of space between the cage and the clamped smartphone so you can easily plug in mic cables or wireless receivers.

Neewer iPhone 15 Pro Max cage

Neewer iPhone 15 Pro Max cage
This cage is iPhone-specific, so it won’t suit your needs if you don’t own an iPhone 15 Pro Max. Unlike the Ride cage, the body of the Neewer cage features a handy filter mount so you can attach an ND filter (sold separately) that enables you to shoot with a higher shutter angle and capture smoother video without over-exposing your footage.
